Block House is a project to design a self-contained house on a much-overlooked back-land site in Lambeth.

The land was once occupied by a brick kiln that fired bricks for the construction of the local neighbourhood, later becoming a coach house and stable.

Nestled in a challenging site, Block House is surrounded by 34 neighbouring properties. Overcoming the limitations of the site, Block House uses carefully defined views into private courtyard gardens to maximise the site whilst avoiding a sense of overlooking.

Large windows and skylights ensure the interior is filled with natural light, overcoming any limitations of the site in relation to sightlines and overlooking. The use of utilitarian materials throughout the home creates a sense of continuity and a connection with the previous life of the site and its surrounding environment.
